About This 9/11 ESL Lesson

How can something that happened before you were born still affect your life? This A1–A2 special edition introduces September 11, 2001 in clear, accessible English and focuses on how its effects remain part of everyday life.

Students read and listen to a beginner-level article about the attacks, airport security, memory and generations. They practice five key words, check comprehension and discuss how we learn about the past.

Groups evaluate six changes in modern life, choose what a younger class should learn and which image not to show, and write a guided 60–100 word opinion about how the past shapes their lives.

For one generation, 9/11 is a memory. For another, it is history. Both live in the world it made, and for the young it feels normal. How can a day you do not remember still change your life?
