About This World Cup ESL Lesson

Every four years, people who may rarely watch football gather around the same tournament. Strangers celebrate together, nations share moments of excitement and disappointment, and more than a billion people may watch a single final.

This free B1–B2 World Cup ESL lesson explores why the tournament matters beyond football. Students consider the spectacle and rivalry of international sport, the billions spent by host countries, tourism, national pride and the difficult question of what kind of legacy remains after the crowds leave.

Students then evaluate six things a host country receives, from a new metro line and temporary jobs to debt and a shared national memory, before deciding whether hosting was worth it and whether they would support a bid from their own city.

Every four years, something remarkable happens. For one month, people who have never kicked a ball gather around screens in homes, cafés, and public squares, united by a single tournament. Strangers hug after a goal; entire nations hold their breath together. The World Cup is football, but it is also something much larger.
