About This Advanced World Cup ESL Lesson

The World Cup can empty streets, unite strangers and give a country memories that last for generations. Yet the tournament also raises difficult questions about who pays for global sporting spectacles, how host nations use them and whether football can ever be separated from politics.

This C1–C2 World Cup ESL lesson examines sportswashing, expensive infrastructure, corruption, migrant workers, national identity and nationalism. Students also consider why criticism may be applied differently to different hosts and whether political neutrality in sport is actually possible.

Students then test the principle that sport and politics should be kept separate against six difficult cases before proposing one condition that every future World Cup host should meet and defending it under challenge.

Some argue that sport should simply stay out of politics. Others reply that an event this large is always political; the only question is whose politics it serves.
