About This Advanced Four-Day Workweek ESL Lesson

Supporters of the four-day week point to trials showing steady output, lower stress and fewer sick days. But whether those results can be transferred across the workforce is a more difficult question.

This C1–C2 lesson asks students to examine the evidence behind shorter working weeks and consider who is represented in successful trials. They explore the practical differences between office work and jobs that depend on fixed hours of cover.

Students test whether the same trial result could transfer to six very different workplaces before proposing and defending a working-week policy for a city council employing nurses, teachers and office staff.

If only well-paid professionals gain a three-day weekend, the policy may widen the very gap it claims to close, far from creating a level playing field.
