About This Advanced Digital Detox ESL Lesson

Digital detoxes promise relief from constant connectivity, but the evidence behind their benefits is less straightforward than the headlines often suggest.

This C1–C2 lesson asks students to examine addictive design, digital wellbeing and the tension between individual responsibility and the way technology is built. Students consider whether switching off is a meaningful solution or simply a temporary response to a deeper problem.

The critical-thinking task pushes students beyond simple opinions by asking them to distinguish correlation from causation. They then propose and defend a school phone policy under challenge.

Critics argue that detoxes treat the symptoms rather than the cause. If the problem lies in how technology is built, asking individuals for more willpower lets companies off the hook.
