About This Digital Detox ESL Lesson

Phones help us work, communicate and stay connected, but constant notifications and habitual scrolling can make it difficult to switch off.

This B1–B2 Digital Detox ESL lesson asks students to examine their own relationship with technology. They consider the benefits and costs of being constantly connected and discuss whether a digital detox can help people use technology more intentionally.

Students complete an Honest Audit of their screen habits, plan a smartphone-free Saturday and finish by giving a balanced opinion on whether regular digital detoxes are a good idea.

Technology is not the enemy. The same device that steals our attention can translate a language, call for help in an emergency, or keep us close to family far away. The problem is rarely the tool itself — it is how, and how often, we use it.
