ABOUT THIS LESSON
About This War and Peace ESL Lesson
Why do wars begin, and what makes them stop? This A1–A2 ESL lesson uses accessible English to help students understand three important questions: why wars start, how people act during war, and how wars end.
Students learn that conflicts can have many causes, including land, power, money and old anger. The reading introduces rules that protect ordinary people, wounded soldiers and prisoners, and explains how a ceasefire is different from lasting peace.
Students then work together to make a deal between two countries fighting over a valley. They discuss difficult choices, role-play people affected by the deal, and write about whether ending a war or building peace is harder.
