About This War and Peace ESL Lesson

War appears so regularly in news feeds and history books that it can seem like one single subject. This B1–B2 ESL lesson breaks it into three clearer questions: why wars start, how they are fought, and what finally makes them stop.

Students explore the difference between the event that triggers a conflict and the deeper grievances behind it. They also examine international humanitarian law, including the distinction between civilians and combatants, protection for the wounded and prisoners, and the principle of proportionality.

The lesson then turns from fighting to peace. Students consider the difference between a ceasefire and a peace agreement before taking the role of mediators trying to broker a deal between two exhausted neighboring countries. The lesson asks whether ending a war and building a peace are really the same job.
