About This UK vs US Education ESL Lesson

A sixteen-year-old in Britain is in Year 11, but an American student of the same age may be a sophomore. This A1–A2 School Daze lesson uses clear English to introduce the differences between the British and American school systems.

Students read and listen to a short article about primary and secondary schools, elementary and high schools, years and grades, GCSEs, subject choices and university degrees. They practice key vocabulary and answer five comprehension questions.

The lesson then asks which education system suits different students, invites groups to design a school system for a new country, and finishes with a guided 60–100 word opinion-writing task.
