About This Advanced Overtourism ESL Lesson

Overtourism is often presented as a simple problem of visitor numbers. This C1–C2 lesson asks students to look beyond the numbers and examine who benefits from tourism, who bears its costs and what happens when historic neighborhoods begin to lose the people who live there.

Students consider examples including Barcelona, Venice and Amsterdam while examining entry fees, visitor caps, hotel restrictions and attempts to disperse tourists. Rather than treating any response as an easy solution, the lesson focuses on the trade-offs and assumptions behind different policies.

Students evaluate proposed responses to overtourism, challenge the assumptions behind them and defend a position under pressure. The lesson combines advanced reading and audio with vocabulary, evidence-based comprehension, discussion, critical thinking, structured argumentation and extended opinion writing.

The word “overtourism” suggests a simple problem of numbers, but numbers alone explain surprisingly little. What matters more is concentration, and who bears the brunt of it.
