About This Life Skills ESL Lesson

Schools are often criticized for failing to teach practical skills such as financial literacy, yet traditional subjects can develop habits of thought that remain valuable long after specific facts are forgotten.

This C1–C2 lesson asks whether education is still fit for purpose. Students examine the obstacles to curriculum reform, the value of academic subjects and the zero-sum choices involved in adding new material.

Through an advanced reading and audio, discussion, a timetable redesign task, contextual expressions, a subject-defense challenge and extended argument writing, students confront what educational reform would actually cost.

A student can leave school able to find the missing side of a right-angled triangle, analyze a sonnet and explain photosynthesis. The same student may have no idea how income tax works, what compound interest does to a debt, or why a credit-card balance can double while nobody is looking.
