About This Trick or Treat! ESL Lesson

This advanced C1–C2 Halloween ESL lesson explores the history of Halloween, from the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain to modern American traditions. Students read about the shift from carved turnips to pumpkins, trick-or-treating and the role of movies and television in spreading Halloween around the world.

The lesson examines the commercialization of Halloween and the different ways communities respond to imported festivals. Students consider whether traditions retain their meaning as they travel and whether commercial celebrations can coexist with local customs.

In Challenge the Assumption, students evaluate five common claims about Halloween using evidence. They practice advanced expressions, negotiate fair rules for a neighborhood Halloween party, and write an opinion piece that addresses the strongest opposing view.

Ancient spirits, modern candy.
