About This Halloween ESL Lesson

Why do children dress up, carve pumpkins and knock on strangers’ doors asking for candy? In Trick or Treat!, students explore how Halloween developed from the ancient Gaelic festival of Samhain into a major celebration in the United States and beyond.

This B1–B2 ESL lesson examines Halloween’s roots, the change from carved turnips to pumpkins, the growth of trick-or-treating and the role of American movies and television in spreading the holiday worldwide. Students also consider objections to Halloween and its commercial side.

Students examine five common assumptions about Halloween, practice key vocabulary, discuss how traditions change across cultures, negotiate rules for a neighborhood Halloween party and write an opinion on festivals spreading to new countries.

Ancient spirits, modern candy.
