About This Advanced Fast Fashion ESL Lesson

A T-shirt that costs less than a sandwich appears to be a bargain, but its price tag tells only part of the story. Low prices can shift costs elsewhere through low wages, weaker safety standards, environmental damage and enormous volumes of discarded clothing.

This C1–C2 Fast Fashion ESL lesson asks students to examine those hidden costs while resisting simple solutions. Donating unwanted clothes can damage markets elsewhere, boycotts may threaten garment workers' jobs, and greener product lines may achieve little if overall production continues to rise.

Students evaluate six well-intentioned responses and predict their possible side effects before taking the role of a clothing brand, proposing one supply-chain reform and defending it against campaigners.

Low prices come at a cost; it is simply paid elsewhere. Brands compete by producing faster and cheaper, pressing suppliers to cut wages and safety checks in what critics call a race to the bottom.
