About This Seasons ESL Lesson

Most of us learn the year as a neat cycle of four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. But that familiar model is not universal. This B1–B2 ESL lesson asks students to question something that often feels like a simple fact: what exactly makes a season a season?

Students explore wet and dry seasons near the equator, monsoon patterns, traditional South Asian calendars that have counted six seasons, and the reversed seasonal cycle of the Southern Hemisphere. The article also introduces the British and American terms autumn and fall and considers how warming temperatures are blurring familiar seasonal boundaries.

Students then connect the topic to their own lives through discussion, redesign their country's calendar in the Redraw the Year critical-thinking task, and present their new system as a weather-news segment before writing their own answer to the lesson's central question.
