About This UK ESL Lesson

England is not Britain, and Britain is not the UK. This B1–B2 UK ESL lesson starts with one of the most common misunderstandings about the United Kingdom and introduces students to its four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Students explore the culture and character associated with each country, from Shakespeare and the Premier League to Edinburgh and the Highlands, Cymru and the Welsh language, and Belfast and the Giant's Causeway. They also examine the unusual way national identity works across sport, citizenship and everyday life.

The lesson then goes beyond basic geography. Students consider what actually makes somewhere a country, comparing flags, language, government, borders, passports, currency, national sports teams, culture, history and a sense of belonging before applying their own rules to all four UK countries.
