Heatwaves are becoming harder to ignore. In many cities, summer temperatures now regularly reach dangerous levels, affecting health, work, transport, energy use and everyday life.
This B1–B2 Extreme Heat ESL lesson explores why extreme heat is becoming more common, how climate change can intensify heatwaves and the difficult balance between preventing further warming and adapting to temperatures that are already rising.
The lesson combines an original reading and audio with vocabulary, comprehension, discussion questions and critical-thinking activities. Students use English to discuss extreme heat, air conditioning, city planning, climate responsibility, adaptation and who should pay for protection from a hotter world.
