About This Public Etiquette ESL Lesson

This advanced C1–C2 public etiquette ESL lesson explores the unwritten rules that shape everyday encounters, from speakerphone calls and personal space to escalator etiquette and filming in public.

Students examine how social expectations differ between places and generations, why visitors cannot always anticipate local norms, and whether locals should give newcomers the benefit of the doubt.

The lesson moves from analyzing six clashes between social rulebooks to practicing nuanced expressions, defending a hotel welcome card under challenge, and writing a 200–250 word argument that addresses the opposing view.

Public life runs on an unwritten code. We absorb it young and then mistake it for simple good manners. A foreign city can become a social minefield, and no list will keep a visitor safe.
