ABOUT THIS LESSON
About This Neighborhood Change ESL Lesson
What happens when the street you grew up on becomes almost unrecognizable? In No Place Like Home!, students explore the ways neighborhoods change, from new subway stations and apartment buildings to the disappearance of familiar local shops.
This B1–B2 ESL lesson weighs the convenience of modern transport and services against the loss of community connections. Students discuss changing populations, people living alone, independent businesses, new residents and the importance of shared places such as parks and libraries.
Students consider a redevelopment plan from five residents’ perspectives in Through Their Eyes, practice vocabulary in context, take part in an imaginary neighborhood walking tour and write an opinion about whether a neighborhood can change completely and still feel like home.
