About This Chocolate ESL Lesson

Chocolate is an everyday treat, but cocoa prices have risen sharply. This A1–A2 ESL lesson asks whether chocolate could become a luxury and why some companies are making bars smaller or charging more.

Students learn how small family farms in West Africa grow cocoa, why changing weather and disease threaten harvests, and why higher chocolate prices do not always mean higher incomes for farmers. The article also introduces stronger cocoa plants, fair pay and chocolate made without cocoa.

Students discuss what they would pay for chocolate, run a fictional chocolate company, negotiate between a company representative and a cocoa farmer, and write an opinion about who should pay the real cost of chocolate.

A cheap treat can hide a very expensive problem.
