About This Beginner News & Headlines ESL Lesson

Two newspapers can report the same event using completely different headlines. Both can be true, but the words, photographs and details they choose can leave readers with very different impressions.

This A1–A2 lesson uses accessible English to explore how headlines work, why emotional words attract attention and how editors choose what readers see first.

Students compare different ways of presenting a news story, choose a headline and photograph for a front page, create a simple rule for fair reporting and defend their editorial decisions.

Two newspapers write about the same afternoon. One headline says, “Thousands Ask for Change.” The other says, “Protest Stops the City.” Both are true. But the two sentences leave you with a different feeling. Why?
