About This 9/11 ESL Lesson

More than two decades have passed since the attacks of September 11, 2001. For millions of people, that morning remains a personal memory. For most university students today, it is history. This B1–B2 9/11 ESL lesson explores what happens when a defining event moves from one generation's lived experience into another generation's history books.

Students learn the essential facts of the attacks before examining their continuing impact on everyday life. From tighter airport security and reinforced cockpit doors to surveillance powers, foreign policy and attitudes toward Muslims and people assumed to be Muslim, the lesson asks students to notice changes they may have inherited without ever experiencing the world that came before them.

Rather than focusing only on what happened that day, the lesson asks a wider question: how can an event you do not remember still shape your life? Students consider the difference between memory and history, evaluate how much modern life really owes to 9/11 and decide what younger generations need to understand about events they never witnessed.
