About This Travel ESL Lesson

Two tourists can visit the same country and return with entirely different experiences. This C1–C2 lesson examines all-inclusive resorts, tourist spending, authenticity and the limits of independent travel.

Students consider the difference between simply visiting a destination and meaningfully engaging with its culture, while challenging the assumption that backpackers always travel more authentically.

The lesson includes a seven-day Thailand itinerary under a $700 budget, advanced expressions, a defended four-day travel proposal and a 200–250 word opinion essay addressing an opposing view.

Two friends fly to Phuket in the same week. One spends seven days inside an all-inclusive resort: pool, buffet, spa and a lounger facing the sea. The other rents a scooter, eats at a night market, takes a ferry, falls for a tourist trap, gets lost twice and comes home with a stomach bug and far better stories.
