Birth rates are falling in countries across the world. Many young adults are delaying parenthood, having fewer children, or deciding not to become parents at all.

This magazine-style English lesson explores the financial, social, and personal reasons behind the global baby bust. It also asks what shrinking populations could mean for schools, workplaces, pensions, public services, and future generations.

Students read an original article, learn useful vocabulary, and take part in discussion, critical-thinking, speaking, and writing activities about family choices, government responsibility, affordability, aging societies, and population change.

For most of human history, population growth appeared unstoppable. Today, however, many countries are facing the opposite problem. Fewer babies are being born, classrooms are becoming quieter, and societies are beginning to ask who will support their aging populations.
