About This Overtourism ESL Lesson

Tourism can bring jobs, money and opportunities to cities around the world. But when millions of visitors arrive in the same destinations, tourism can also create crowded streets, rising prices, pressure on housing and frustration for local residents.

This free B1–B2 Overtourism ESL lesson explores what happens when popular destinations become overwhelmed by visitors. Students consider the impact of mass tourism on local communities and discuss whether cities should limit visitor numbers, introduce tourist taxes or find other ways to manage overcrowding.

The lesson combines an original reading and audio with vocabulary, comprehension, discussion questions and critical-thinking activities. Students use English to discuss tourism, travel, crowded destinations, local communities, responsible tourism and who really owns a city when millions of people want to visit it.

In recent years, Barcelona has seen something strange. Some local residents have walked through crowded tourist districts carrying water pistols, spraying visitors as a form of protest. It was not meant as a joke. For many people who live there, tourism has become part of a bigger question: who really owns a city?
